Classical Education
Classical education offers a distinct approach to learning, focusing on direct instruction from teachers rather than relying heavily on technology-based tools like tablet apps and online learning commonly used in modern classrooms. It emphasizes the development of moral character, critical thinking, and wisdom, contrasting with modern education's focus on problem-solving and decision-making skills. In addition to standard coursework, classical education includes subjects such as Latin or Classical Greek, music, and debate, with an integrated approach where all subjects are taught as interconnected, rather than isolated. Memorization, along with active participation and hands-on activities, plays a key role in classical education, while modern classrooms have largely moved away from memorization as a core component. The philosophy of classical education is rooted in the belief that all individuals share a common human nature and possess immortal souls, while modern education places its trust in human ideals and reasoning.
The Classical Education Model
The classical education model is structured around the Trivium, which consists of three distinct stages: Grammar, Logic, and Rhetoric. These stages reflect the natural progression of a child's learning from foundational knowledge to critical thinking and eloquent expression.
Grammar Stage (Grades K-6)
In this stage, children focus on acquiring foundational knowledge. Our students will build a strong base in religion, math, reading, writing, Classical Greek, science, music, and physical education, alongside artistic expression. This comprehensive approach prepares them for the next phase of their learning journey.
Logic Stage (Grades 7-8)
As students enter the Logic stage, they begin to focus on understanding and making connections between the knowledge they've acquired. A modern foreign language is introduced in 6th grade, alongside the continued study of Classical Greek. Students also learn basic research techniques, helping them develop critical thinking skills and the ability to connect ideas across subjects.
Rhetoric Stage (Grades 9-12)
The Rhetoric stage emphasizes the art of communication and wisdom. Students will deepen their understanding of subjects, applying rhetorical skills to read, interpret, and debate ideas across all disciplines. This stage fosters the ability to express complex ideas with clarity and confidence.
Throughout all stages, religious instruction remains central, with students continually growing in their faith and participation in parish life.
Classical Language Requirement
A hallmark of the classical education model is the requirement to study a classical, or "dead," language. This is a vital part of the curriculum as it provides students with a deeper understanding of the origins of our language, enhances critical thinking, and fosters an immersive exploration of culture, literature, and history. Most classical schools choose between Latin or Greek.
At St. Kosmas Academy, we have chosen Ancient Greek for several reasons. The language of the early Church, Ancient Greek has had a profound influence on Western civilization and remains foundational to many intellectual traditions. It is also the perfect fit for an Orthodox Christian school, offering students a direct link to the rich heritage of the Church and its teachings.
